Gulf Consult in association with Malone Given Parsons (Toronto, Canada) and Parsons Brinckerhoff International (Kuwait) were engaged to develop the Physical Development Plan of the Northern Gateway Sub-Regional Area for Kuwait Municipality.
The Northern Gateway (7th Sub Region) is strategically located approximately 80 km north of Kuwait City and borders Iraq. It has a total area of 1,700 km2 and includes a broad mix of existing land uses, most notably the border post, extensive commercial and hobby farming land, growing regional retail and oil fields.
The Physical Development Plan for the Northern Gateway will provide a framework for the existing land uses as well as the new uses of an urban centre with a population of 0.5 m, a dry port, employment and economic opportunities and regional road expansions. It will also articulate a vision for the region, identify strategic land use and interrelationships, and provide implementation strategies for the purpose of informing future urban planning and development decisions.
In addition to responding to the unique context of the Northern Gateway, the Physical Development Plan will be prepared in the context of Kuwait’s national planning policies and the surrounding subregional plans (2nd and 3rd Sub Regions).
